Path Lighting System for Lord Wandsworth College

Project type

Street Lighting

This project aimed to install a path lighting system to ensure pupil safety while walking between buildings during dark mornings and evenings on a 650-meter path.

The key challenges included low mounting height restrictions (4 meters), resistance from local authorities concerned about light pollution, and the presence of overhanging trees and varied topography along the path. The local planning conditions required minimizing environmental impact, particularly preserving dark skies and protecting local wildlife.

The solution involved using warm white (3000K) lighting, which is less disruptive to the environment, and advanced motion detection with a "grouping" system. This technology allowed lights to activate only when users were present, following their movement along the path and switching off afterward, significantly reducing light pollution and energy consumption. Strategic positioning of low-mounted LED fixtures ensured sufficient lighting coverage despite the challenges of low mounting heights, tree obstructions, and varied terrain.

The result was a safe, energy-efficient lighting system that minimized environmental impact, satisfying both local planning regulations and sustainability goals. The project successfully balanced pedestrian safety with dark sky preservation and wildlife protection, earning positive feedback from the community and local authorities.
